On Saturday, December 9, from 1-4pm, The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) is having the event of the season: CCS GIANT HOLIDAY SALE AND AUCTION. The event will feature the famous CCS Sketch Factory (back by popular demand) offering attendees custom illustrations to be drawn on location by CCS students. Great holiday items to acquire at this event include: comics, graphic novels, signed books, prints, and rare and remarkable items and services. Music, cookies, and fun to be had by all! Bring the entire family!

Cartoonists and CCS faculty members, Steve Bissette and James Sturm, will be signing books. Steve Bissette is best-known for Saga of the Swamp Thing, Taboo, "1963," Tyrant, and for co-creating the character of John Constantine. His comic efforts also fueled many films, including Constantine and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Secret of the Ooze. James Sturm’s comics and graphic novels have been translated into several languages and have won numerous awards, including "Best Graphic Novel of 2001" by Time Magazine. Also signing books will be Xeric Foundation award recipient and CCS student, Alexis Frederick-Frost, who will be debuting his first published graphic novel, La Primavera. The Xeric Foundation supports the nation’s most promising cartoonists by providing grants for self-publishing their work.

The event is a FUNraiser with proceeds going to support the CCS mission of offering the highest quality of education to students interested in creating visual stories. Please come show your support for the college and pick up a great holiday gift!

Jason Lutes


Berlin has been lauded as one of the most ambitious works of historical fiction in comics to date. The narrative follows a host of characters in the city of Berlin between the years of 1928 and 1933. Jason Lutes’ clear-lined artwork and remarkable ability to juggle multiple viewpoints presents a Berlin that teems with elegance and humor, conflict and interconnection.

ORIGINAL "ZIPPY" STRIP
Bill Griffith, 2003


Bill Griffith, the creator of Zippy the Pinhead, began his comics career in 1969 with strips published in the East Village Other and Screw Magazine. Zippy debuted in 1970 in the first issue of Real Pulp Comics. Described by Griffith as a "walking subconscious,” Zippy has been the subject of at least two doctoral dissertations and is said to have appeared on the Berlin wall.

HOOD MUSEUM PRIVATE COLLECTION TOUR


Katherine W. Hart, curator of academic programming at the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College will give a personally guided tour of a private collection including 18th and 19th century satirical prints and original Disney cells. The tour will be open to one bidder and up to nine guests.

UNDERSEA DELIGHTS


This "Lobster Plate Special," donated by Steve and Marjory Bissette, includes an original sketch by Steve, decorative glass platter, two plates, potholder, lobster-claw butane lighter, and a box of Maine's finest salt-water taffy.

Art Spiegelman (signed, with original drawing inside) Both volumes of Art Spiegelman's Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel are collected in The Complete Maus. Originally published serially in 1977, Spiegelman's incredibly moving tale of Holocaust survival centers around himself and his father Vladek. As Art endeavors to preserve his father's story, the narrative unfolds in an enthralling exploration of hope, fear, and cross-generational guilt. SARAH STEWART TAYLOR NOVEL NAMESAKE


CCS faculty member Sarah Stewart Taylor, author of the celebrated mystery series featuring art historian Sweeney St. George, will name a character in a forthcoming novel after one bidder. Winner will also receive signed copies of Taylor's previous books: Mansions of the Dead, O'Artful Death, Still As Death, and Judgment of the Grave.

Considered one of the brightest and most talented French comic artists, Joann Sfar has written or collaborated on more than one hundred books for adults and children. William Erwin Eisner (1917-2005) was an acclaimed American comic writer, artist, and entrepreneur. H e is considered one of the most important contributors to the development of the medium. In 1988, the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award was created to honor yearly achievements in the comics medium. The Building is a chronicle of the lives contained within one city building. Due out in April of 2007, The Center for Cartoon Studies presents its first ever publication, Houdini: The Handcuff King. Jason Lutes (Berlin) and Nick Bertozzi (The Masochists, Rubber Necker) collaborate to produce a striking and energetic depiction of a day in the life of Harry Houdini. Also included is an original drawing by Nick Bertozzi.

Long associated with the New Yorker, Upper Valley legend Ed Koren has published over a thousand cartoons, covers, and illustrations. His work has been exhibited worldwide, and is included in the permanent collections of the Fogg Museum, The Rhode Island School of Design Museum, The Princeton University Museum, The Fizwilliam Museum at Cambridge University, and the Swann Collection at the Library of Congress.
